I’m proud to say I came up with this myself, although I’m sure I’m not the first. Hell it could be common knowledge for more educated drivers for all I know.

If you concentrate on feeling the area where your foot is on the pedal, versus concentrating on your foot. You’ll be much smoother at everything. I’ve been making a conscious effort at it the last few days and it’s made my shifts, in high rpms, much more consistent. As well as coming off the throttle into high speed turns much smoother.

Don’t worry. When I become famous after Red Bull begs me to coach their F1 drivers, I’ll remember you opponauts!

Are you saying I should stop driving in ski boots?

If they fix to the pedals, your good.

I can’t even start my car in ski boots. MOFO’s do not fit under the dash to depress the clutch.

When I learned a stick, I was told to drive bare foot. Seems like what you’re talking about. I still feel like I’m a faster shifter without shoes.

I might try that on my road trip back home. Keep my feet dry too :)

The floor heat feels better on shoeless feet also. & don’t leave your shoes in front of you. I put mine on the passenger floorboard.

I’m glad you’re skipping that lame “driving for Red Bull” phase and going right to coaching.

:-)

My cousin drives lowboy haulers and dump trucks. He always drives in regular sneakers instead of work boots, so he can feel what the clutch is doing.

Ahhh that might be my problem. I wear boots for work and have to drive my car quite often for it. Perhaps I was getting used to not feeling the clutch and throttle.

Yup, I drive barefoot in most clutch vehicles as 1) I dont fit otherwise 2) I dont drive stick often so when I do, it helps me feel the clutch

I always drive standard in the thinnest soles shoes I can. I briefly had an 03 Protege5, and the first time I drove it I was wearing my boots that I never drive standard in. That wasn’t pretty....

For me, feeling the pedals is important because even my gas pedal has a distinct feel to it. If I ever have to drive in something formal, I drive in regular comfy shoes and then switch to dress shoes before I get out. I cannot even imagine driving with dress shoes.

Denny Hulme was a successful racing driver from New Zealand. He was well known to prefer driving barefoot.

Sounds about right. When he was telling me about it, he specifically mentioned work boots. He didn’t understand why other drivers wore them, because they don’t let you feel what the clutch is doing.

I’m the same way. Most of my driving is in boots, so when I drive in sneakers it’s like my foot is being overloaded with sensation.

I tried to drive my friend’s 944 in boots once. I couldn’t not hit multiple pedals.

With the exception of the 3-mile drive to/from work, I tend to drive wherever I’m going in chucks and change once I arrive if needed.
